US Sanctions Target Russian Defense & Gold Imports

By: SiliconExpert on August 3rd, 2022

The United States has issued sanctions against Russia’s Defense Industry & Gold Imports in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

These sanctions target 99 Russian groups and individuals critical to the Russian defense industry, including the state-owned defense company, Rostec, producer of Russian helicopters and aviation, radioelectronics, and armaments. According to the US Treasury Department, these sanctions are intended to “strike at the heart of Russia’s ability to develop and deploy weapons and technology used for Vladimir Putin’s brutal war of aggression against Ukraine.”

Additionally, the United States Department of the Treasury has also banned the import of all gold imports into the US from Russia, joining the United Kingdom, Canada & Japan in banning Russian gold imports. This could have a detrimental effect on the Russian economy, as gold is the country’s largest non-energy export, contributing over $15 billion USD to the Russian economy in 2021.

Business impact may come in the form of materials banned from a certain fabrication location and need to be rerouted to a new fab site. Or precious metals and minerals that suddenly spike in price due to increased tariffs, so alternative suppliers need to be found in order to save costs.
