European Union SVHC Candidate List Grows
January 25, 2022 – The European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) has added an additional four substances to the Candidate List of Substances of Very High Concern (SVHC). This brings the total number of substances to 223.
The SVHC Candidate list is published by the ECHA in accordance with the EU REACH legislation. This list serves as a reference list and is the first step before a substance is placed on the Authorization list. The inclusion of any of these substances onto the Authorization list would prohibit their use, except in the case of an exemption by the ECHA.
Once a substance is placed on the SVHC Candidate list, companies are under a legal obligation to ensure the continued safe use of these chemicals. Companies are also mandated to notify the ECHA if any of their products contain SVHCs.
Below is a list of the four new chemicals added to the SVHC Candidate List, along with some of the most common occurrences of these substances in consumer products.
