SiliconExpert Success Stories
With over 10,000 products designed to redefine what’s possible, Qualcomm needed a solution to ensure they had accurate part number and end lifecycle information. A tool with accuracy and precision is critical to their success.

Qualcomm is a multinational semiconductor company that designs and markets wireless telecommunications products. On their website, it writes, “Every product we share with the world is designed to redefine what's possible.” With a multitude of products in Qualcomm’s library, it can often be difficult to obtain ongoing life cycle information.
Robert Matias, a Component Specialist and Staff Manager at Qualcomm, said the company was looking for a tool with accuracy and precision. Upon testing multiple options, it was discovered that many failed to meet their needs.
“We weren’t too thrilled with prior tools we used,” Matias said.

Components Engineering turned to SiliconExpert after finding the company’s Part Search and BOM tools were significantly more accurate and cost-effective.
The accuracy of Part Search was the primary driver in choosing SiliconExpert. Matias stated that when loading parts into other companies’ search tools, he would encounter a 50% accuracy reading (if he was lucky). With SiliconExpert, the accuracy improved by 20-30%. On occasions, he has uploaded an actual design bill of materials with accuracy higher than 80%.
Matias says that with SiliconExpert, he expects to find a match when he uses Part Search and would be shocked if he didn’t find what he’s looking for. In the rare case that the part is not returned, he noted that SiliconExpert’s support ticket system works to obtain and provide the needed information.
“At the end of the day, when we were looking at SiliconExpert, by far it has been the best tool I’ve seen. It’s the only one I’ve gotten giddy about. I’ve had, in essence, zero complaints,” Matias said.

By adopting SiliconExpert’s tool, Qualcomm has been able to both streamline their processes and improve communications between teams. While the Operations department originally used the Part Search tool to detect obsolescence, other areas are now taking advantage of the solution. The Procurement department utilizes the bill of materials health report to do forecasting and foresee problematic parts early in the product lifecycle.
Qualcomm engineering uses the “Briefcase” feature to compare part’s functionality. This allows Matias to review similar parts side-by-side to determine if there is a good fit within their existing parts list.
During a recent acquisition, this part comparison feature played a key role migrating their parts into Agile. Using part comparison, they were able to compare the new company’s part list to existing parts in their library to find cross-references that would perform just as well. This allowed Qualcomm to save time, maintain design integrity, and keep its part count down.
Matias explained that SiliconExpert is cost-effective and user friendly, but the most noteworthy difference is the impact on workflow efficiency, which results in lower soft costs. Using SiliconExpert, the Qualcomm teams are able to get needed data information in one location, preventing the need for web searches and multiple phone calls and emails!
