Turkey-Syria Earthquake 2023 Updates

On Monday, February 6, 2023 in Kahramanmaras, Turkey – a devastating series of earthquakes rocked a 500 kilometer (310 mi) section of central Turkey to northern Syria. As of February 13, the death toll has reached 35,000 individuals. Hospitals in Turkey are filled with 80,000 people and over 1 million are housed in temporary shelters.
Devastating Earthquakes in Turkey – Over 2,000 Aftershocks Followed
In terms of magnitude and destruction, this earthquake is the strongest in Turkey since the 1939 Erzincan earthquake and the 1668 North Anatolia earthquake. Syria has never seen such a destructive and powerful earthquake in two centuries, since the 1822 Aleppo earthquake.
- 01:17 UTC – Magnitude 7.8 extreme (XI) earthquake hits near Gaziantep
- 10:24 UTC – Magnitude 7.7 extreme (X) earthquake hits the Kahramanmaraş Province (95 km from first earthquake)
- Major cities impacted: Adana, İskenderun, Osmaniye, Gaziantep, Kahramanmaraş, Şanlıurfa, Adıyaman, Malatya, Nizip, and Siverek. The fatal area of impact spans 500 kilometers from Elazığ, Türkiye to Aleppo, Syria.
Global Economic Impact from the Turkey Earthquake
As efforts are under way to locate and rescue survivors underneath the rubble during the middle of a bitterly cold winter in Turkey, the world is bracing for the impending impact to Turkey and Syria’s economy. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) has estimated that the economic loss can reach $100 billion USD.
Major Developments in Turkey’s Economy:
- The Port of Iskenderun was closed until Saturday and A.P. Moller – Maersk, the world’s largest container shipping company, had completely halted all operations in the Iskenderun after toppled containers sparked explosions and a massive fire
- Nearby shipping hubs, Port of Mersin and Port Said, may be used to divert shipments by Maersk
- After a 3-day sell off, Turkey’s stock exchange, Borsa Istanbul, suspended trading after taking a loss of 16% of its value from Friday’s close
