Almost every software company is a database backend with a website frontend for user interface. The user interface is designed to be human-readable, and is great when you’re looking for manual hands-on interactions with data. To get computer-readable, automated access to the API, you want to cut out the website middleman and query the database directly. An API or Application Programming Interface is a method by which clients can proxy those queries to a database via structured URLs. Based on the additional values encoded into the URL, you can request data directly from our API, receiving a user-unfriendly, but computer-readable JSON or XML file, which persists within your system, rather than being cleared when you click away from the browser tab.
Microsoft Word, Excel, PDF, CSV, and others–master parts lists come in many document formats. However, since the data comes from many sources, the result is a manual process of data entry that is timely and sometimes unreadable by different software.
Unfortunately, not all customers have an efficient software to manage their documents and a massive amount of compliance procedures to follow can be overwhelming. An effective data partner can make all the difference to make the document extraction process more reliable.
In cases of clients with needs on an international scale, SiliconExpert Professional Services will process all the customer documents for the information either published or not published on suppliers’ websites. Then SiliconExpert configures a solution that can extract a customer’s Manufacturer Parts Number (MPN) from a variety of document types and display them in a correct Full scale implementation, enhanced data services and dedicated support solutions for your business.
SiliconExpert Professional Services could acquire data like Regulatory Compliance, Obsolescence Management, Electrical specification Data, Price and Inventory, Manufacturing Data, Design Support Data, Alternatives, Qualification & Reliability, Trade and Export control.
You can derive data from our web service, P5, or set up automated calls to our API. P5 is best suited for an engineer to query the parts database and make decisions based on a single part. The API access is would be better for a user who wants to set up a large amount of parts-related calls and automate the calls to process directly into a native environment. The API access lacks the user interface and visualization elements of P5, which requires a technical investment to use compared to its browser-based sibling. However, the ability to customize and mechanize your interactions with our database provides high levels of customization and flexiblity.
API subscriptions are typically sold for one-year increments. There are a few things to consider when picking which package and size best fits your business needs.
The Silver package contains static information like if a component is obsolete or if it is still active in production. The Gold package has dynamic data and derived information such as the estimated years until a part reaches end of life.
Unique to SiliconExpert, the clients quota is deducted on a per part basis and not per query. Your quota is decreased for part detail requests to our database; a part search will not decrement your quota. A part detail request will include data such as compliance, parametric, lifecycle, predictive risk, and more. This information is accessible for the remainder of your contract year and will not require another request against your quota. In comparison to competitors, this could be multiple calls against the quota each time a piece of this data is accessed.
The quota will be decremented with the following queries per unique part: Part Detail Search, Add Part to ACL, and cross reference.
Use the User Status command with the POST protocol. https://www.siliconexpert.com/apidocs/#user-status. You will be warned when you approach zero, and you can always revise your quota upwards mid-contract.
You can increase your quota during your contract term. If you have excess quota, it will not be refunded or credited. Please contact your SIliconExpert representative for more information.
Documentation can be accessed here https://www.siliconexpert.com/apidocs/. If you’re not using the ‘Product API’ as described in our documentation, you’re most likely using an outdated version of the API and need to update. Alternatively, you may be using a custom API for your unique needs, in which case, please consult your SIliconExpert account representative.
First, authenticate your user session, then create a structured query based on a call as outlined in the API documentation (hyperlink to page). If successful, a JSON or XML file will be returned with the results of the query. That data will persist within your system and can be used as needed as long as it is not resold.
There are three common points of failure. Please check the following,
Make sure you are querying api.siliconexpert as the endpoint, not app.siliconexpert. The ‘api’ endpoint is our modern servers, and the ‘app’ endpoint pointed to our now-defunct ‘Classic’ servers.
All of SiliconExpert’s partners can be found on our Partner Solutions page. If your PLM is not currently listed as a partner, please reach out to a SiliconExpert representative and your PLM to discuss a potential integration.
As of today, we do not make changes to our API for individual clients. Our Professional Services team (link to https://www.siliconexpert.com/professional-services/) may be able to help create custom solutions. We constantly leverage feedback to make our services exceed the needs of our clients.
Our API solution is priced consistently whether you purchase them from SE or from a channel partner integration.
If a client purchases directly through SE, they are responsible for the development work and integrating into their tools; however, it provides the endless customization opportunities to cater to their business needs.
If a client purchases through a channel integration partner, they partner already did the development work and it becomes plug and play in their native tools.
API is a background data exchange between SiliconExpert and a host tool. The data is brought into the host tool and handled in the background. SEConnect is a plug-in widget with a robust user interface that allows for the SiliconExpert experience embedded within the host tool.
The core data for SEConnect is the same as in P5; however, P5 has full alerting and a much more robust reporting and prediction engine. SEConnect allows you to embed the data within your native ecosystem where as P5 is accessed through our web browser.
Depending on your broader Infrastructure, yes. SEConnect is available in most popular PLM and EDA tools. Visit our partner pages to learn more: https://www.siliconexpert.com/partners/
A SEConnect license works wherever you have SEConnect implemented, so you can use it in multiple PLM and EDA tools.
One of the SiliconExpert team members will help assist in a quote for SEConnect. Licenses are sold by floating seats meaning that more than one user can use the login but only one user may use it at a time. To enable multiple users access simultaneously, multiple licenses are required.

There are 10 in total: Cadmium (Cd), Lead (Pb), Mercury (Hg), Hexavalent Chromium (Cr VI), Polybrominated Biphenyls (PBB), Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers (PBDE), Bis(2-Ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), Benzyl butyl phthalate (BBP), Dibutyl phthalate (DBP), Di isobutyl phthalate (DIBP)
Cadmium (#7440-43-9), Lead (#7439-92-1), Mercury (#7439-97-6), Hexavalent Chromium (#18540-29-9), DEHP (#117-81-7), BBP (#85-68-7), DBP (#84-74-2), DIBP (#84-69-5)
Certain exemptions are allowed for RoHS restrictions. For instance, Exemption 6(c) was granted for lead in copper and brass alloys, allowing up to 4% lead (Pb) by weight.
Fines vary by region and location of the infraction. German enforcement gives fines of up to €30,000 Euros and a maximum of 1 year of imprisonment to the importer of the non-compliant goods.
RoHS focuses on EEE (Electronic and Electrical Equipment) and covers products from home appliances and electronics to tools and two-wheeled electric vehicles. REACH covers any and all goods on the European market, regulating 224 chemical substances which pose a risk to exposure during the whole lifetime of the product.
REACH’s SVHC list is updated every 6 months.
Penalties can include fines and imprisonment. Fines may total up to €30,000 Euros and up to 4 years of imprisonment.
Substances identified as causing cancer are given a metric called “No Significant Risk Level” (NSRL) and Maximum Allowable Dose Level (MADL). This means that exposure to the amount of chemical in a product would result in no more than one case of cancer out of every 100,000 individuals who were exposed to the chemical over a 70-year time period. Measured in µg per day. Maximum Acceptable Dose Level “MADL” is the level at which a chemical would have no observable effect, even if an individual were exposed to 1,000 times that level.
Penalties can include fines and imprisonment. The business can be subject to civil penalties of up to $2,500 per day for each violation.
Conflict mineral roll up reporting is the process of reporting the use of conflict minerals in a supply chain and reporting on utilized smelters. The conflict mineral reporting template (CMRT) is the free, standardized reporting template that facilitates the transfer of information through the supply chain regarding mineral contry of origin and the smelters and refiners being utilized.
Companies publicly traded in the USA or selling products on the United States market must comply with the Dodd-Frank Act and report on conflict mineral usage.
Minerals and metals can be traced to the suppliers and even the smelters where they have been refined. Each smelter is audited and reports on their conflict status.
Chemical Report, allow users to examine MDS data on BOM level. Users can download a list of all substances, substance mass, CAS #, homogenous materials…etc. This is necessary for many companies to have a complete picture of the materials in the BOM to anticipate regulatory changes, spot hazard, rare and precious substances…etc. which enable our customers to adhere to different regulatory requirements and establish a proactive compliance approach to be ahead of regulatory changes.
EU’s Chemical Agency (ECHA) manages both SCIP and SVHC.
Substances of Very High Concern (SVHC) are chemical substances subject to authorisation under REACH. Currently there are 224 SVHC that are listed on the candidate list. Under REACH regulations, manufacturers and importers must declare any SVHC if they’re present. If the SVHC exceeds 0.1% by weight in the product, manufacturers/importers are required to notify their customers.
SCIP is the database for information on Substances of Concern In Products under the Waste Framework Directive (WFD). Companies supply articles containing SVHCs on the Candidate List in a concentration above 0.1% weight by weight (w/w) on the EU market have to submit information on these articles to ECHA. The SCIP database ensures that the information on articles containing Candidate List substances is available throughout the whole lifecycle of products and materials, including at the waste stage. The information in the database is then made available to waste operators and consumers.
Alert Management is a way to send users on your team an automated email alert when certain events or changes happen to your BOM or parts.
Alert Management includes supply chain events, inventory and market availability, PCNs, Lifecycle changes, Datasheet changes, RoHS and REACH changes, Manufacturer Acquisition notices, and GIDEP (Government-Industry Data Exchange Program) changes, including summaries of failures or suspect counterfeits.
Users will receive notifications both on the p5 platform and through email.
You will be alerted within 24 hours of the update to our database.
An ACL is an Approved Components List, sometimes called an Approved Parts List. It maps internal part numbers to one or more manufacturer part numbers that have been qualified for use within a company. Often, a company will have a list of parts and manufacturers approved, or disapproved, for use within their products.
An AML is an Approved Manufacturer List, sometimes called an Approved Supplier List or Approved Vendor List. It is a list of Manufacturers and Suppliers that are approved for purchasing by your company. An approved manufacturer is a firm that is compliant with a list of corporate requirements from your company.
Maintaining a quality ACL is a proven way to reduce risks within your designs. It ensures that your designers are using the best possible parts with the longest life, which extends the life of your overall product.
Having an AML may be required for your particular industry. The top two industries requiring an AML are aerospace & defense and medical device manufacturers. An AML can help reduce costs by requiring purchases through suppliers with which a special discount is available.

The Main PCN information source is from component manufacturers, either by receiving direct feed or capturing PCN documents from manufacturers websites.
There are four risk factors that our algorithms rely on when calculating overall risk of a given PN (Lifecycle, Multisourcing, Inventory, Enviornmental). For more information and details on risk factors, please read: https://download.siliconexpert.com/pdfs2/siliconexpert/rfd/risk%20factors%20definitions_P5.pdf
A bill-of-materials (BOM) is an inventory of the raw materials, assembly, and base electrical components necessary to manufacture a product.
BOM Management refers to researching and managing all product data that is released during the lifecycle of the given product, in this case an electronic component. Effective BOM Management is using that data to ensure the product is not using banned or obsolete parts and also making sure that those components can be easily sourced and not disrupt the product development and build.
Our part database includes semiconductors, passives and electromechanical components using partial or complete part numbers. Users can search for relevant attributes on all product types for hundreds of categories.
Across P5’s Part Search, BOM Manager and add-on modules, SiliconExpert provides up to 300 part details, including datasheets, PCNs, technical specifications, lifecycle status, alternate parts, and more.
BOM Grading offers automated part recommendations to effectively improve BOM grades and increase productivity. Each part indicating a high risk is paired with recommendations for alternate parts to increase the health of the BOM. Users can enhance productivity by solving significant issues and showing multi-sourcing options in one single view, eliminating the need for multiple Excel sheets. Customizable to specific company needs, the Advanced Risk reporting feature creates easily shared and exportable risk reports.
